Ashado Returns for 2005 Breeders' Cup Distaff

2004 Breeder's Cup Distaff champion mare Ashado returns to the 2005 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships this year as the big 3/1 favorite to retain her title.

With trainer Todd Pletcher and top money jockey John Velazquez, the Eclipse winner will attempt to be a back-to-back champ of the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

This daughter of Saint Ballado has been one of the stars of her generation since she launched her career with a seven-length romp in her career debut at Belmont Park in June 2003. Ashado won Saratoga's Spinaway (Grade I) and was runner-up to Halfbridled in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) to highlight a stellar 2-year-old season.

She opened 2004 with a romp in the Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) and then ran a close second to unbeaten Kentucky Oaks favorite Madcap Escapade in the Ashland (GI) at Keeneland. Ashado held a record of 5-2-1 in eight races with earnings of $890,800.

As a 3-year-old, she ran second in the April 3 Ashland (GI) at Keeneland, beaten a half length by Madcap Escapade. Then she won the 1 1/16 miles Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) at Fair Grounds Race Course and went on to claim the 2004 Kentucky Oaks.

Challenging Ashado for the BC Distaff crown is third finisher at the 2004 BC Distaff race, Stellar Jayne, who also returns as the 6/1 favorite with #10 top money trainer Saeed bin Suroor and #3 top money jockey Jerry Bailey.

Bodog Racebook Odds: Ashado 3/1; Stellar Jayne 6/1
