2005 Breeders' Cup Mile Favorites

The Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade 1) has created an interesting pattern of sorts in that, for this $1.5 million series on turf of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, good things have come in two's. Four Mile events of the Breeders' Cup races have had repeat winners. Also, the Mile has had three horses who have posted two victories each.

Here are the top 3 contenders for this year:

Leroidesanimaux

Post Position: 11
Jockey: John Velazquez
M/L Odds: 7-5

His name means "King of the Animals" in French, so far he has been just that demonstrating quick cruising speed and can take the race to his rivals from the beginning and still kick arse in the final stretch. A son of the great Brazilian stallion, Candy Stripes, Leroidesanimaux is the hottest horse coming into the Breeders' Cup with eight straight wins from his career debut loss in January 2004. But he bursts out ofhis shell winning five of his next six starts an dcapping the year with the GI Citation at the Hollywood Autumn Turf Festival.

Artie Schiller
Post Position: 2
Jockey: Garrett Gomez
M/L Odds: 6-1

The beaten favorite in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Mile returns in hopes of improving his disappointing 12th-place effort a year ago. After winning 5 of 8 starts a year ago, he’s had a more compact, 5-race campaign in 2005. Won the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch at Saratoga and Grade 2 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland earlier this year. Stretched out to 10 furlongs and ran a bang-up third by a half-length in the Grade 1 Manhattan on Belmont Stakes Day. His sire, El Prado, was Ireland's Champion 2-year-old in 1991.

Singletary
Post Position: 9
Jockey: David Florez
M/L Odds: 8-1

A colt named for a famous football player scored big for an exuberant group of self-proclaimed small-time owners when Singletary, using a huge rally after turning for home, raced to an upset victory in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Mile. Like Ashado in the Distaff division he is coming back to defend his title. This five-year-old has gone through a well-mapped campaign in 2005 to get back to the Mile, including a victory in the Grade 2 Arcadia Handicap at Santa Anita. Singletary is a top-quality stakes runner in his career's four seasons placing second to eventual millionaire Peace Rules in the 2002 Hill Rise Stakes, a precursor of future success; won the Grade 3 La Jolla as a sophomore at Del Mar in 2003; and then rose to world prominence in 2004.

The Breeders' Cup Grows on the Racing World

By Greg Melikov, HorsesWild contributing writer

A group of horse racing leaders got together in 1982 to figure out how to promote the Sport of Kings in a memorable way.

Led by John R. Gaines, former owner of Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, the group aimed to showcase the sport in a grand finale of the racing season.

"Championship day is unquestionably racing's finest hour. It defines our reason for being and elevates the spirit of the entire industry," said Gaines, considered the founding father of the Breeders' Cup, who passed away this year.

Right from the start, BC Day was a big success. The event was first staged on Nov. 10, 1984, when more than 64,000 fans turned out at Hollywood Park, which hosted the event three times.

The BC changed venues yearly. Each fall, the BC baton is passed to a different North American track. Churchill Downs holds the records for both attendance and total wagering. The Louisville track, which has hosted the Greatest Day in Racing five times, attracted more than 80,452 spectators in 1998 and more than $108 million was wagered in 2000.

In addition, Churchill Downs was awarded the 2004 races, but bowed out because it couldn't guarantee the track's massive refurbishing project would be completed in time. So Lone Star Park staged the event and the Texas oval drew rave notices.

Races were staged three times at San Anita and Gulfstream Park. The 22nd renewal will be held for the fourth time at Belmont Park on Oct. 29. One of the most memorable BC Classics there saw Cigar end his perfect 1995 season with a 2 ½-length victory over 51-1 longshot Le Carriere.

These World Thorough Championships, added to the Breeders' Cup moniker several years ago, number eight races with $14 million in purses. The card has become the cornerstone of a year-round program that has allocated more than $380 million to owners and breeders alike.

In addition, most divisional champions crowned during the past two decades have participated in a BC event.

Afleet Alex Won't Race at Breeders Cup

How quick the turn of events.

As earlier reported Preakness and Belmont Stakes champion Afleet Alex was eyeing the $4 million Breeders' Cup prize. But this would not be.

Trainer Tim Ritchey and veterinarian Patricia Hogan announced on Monday that the Afleet's leg injury is not fully healed and the popular 3-year-old colt won't be ready for such a tough race on Oct. 29 at Belmont Park.

Afleet Alex, the star of the Triple Crown series with his acrobatic Preakness win and overpowering Belmont victory, had two strong workouts on the comeback trail and was looking to run in the Classic after a prep race.

But the prospect of running this weekend, either at Belmont Park or at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., then coming back two weeks later and taking on the top horses in training in the $4 million BC Classic was just too much to ask.

"He's just too valuable, and the owners care a lot about him,'' Hogan said. "They are looking at the bigger picture and want to race him next year.''

Afleet Alex underwent surgery on the ankle a week after the injury was discovered, and a screw was inserted in the bone.

Afleet Alex Gears for Comeback at Breeders Cup

Preakness and Belmont Stakes champion, Afleet Alex took, another huge stride in his comeback with a solid half-mile workout Friday at Belmont Park.

With regular rider Jeremy Rose aboard, the 3-year-old breezed a half-mile in 46.02 seconds, the fastest work of 42 horses at the same distance.

Last week, Afleet Alex had his first timed workout -- five furlongs in 59.85 -- since being sidelined with a hairline fracture of his left-front canon bone July 21. The 3-year-old colt had
surgery six days later.

"He hasn't come back completely yet, but he's on his way back,'' trainer Tim Ritchey said. "He's an amazing horse and amazing horses can do amazing things. Everything so far has gone to plan.''

The plan is to get to the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont on Oct. 29. Ritchey most likely will run Afleet Alex in next Friday's seven-furlong Perryville Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. It would be the colt's first race since winning the Belmont on June 11. Afleet Alex won the Preakness despite nearly falling to his knees when bumped by Scrappy T at the top of the stretch.

"The Perryville is an ideal spot,'' Ritchey said. "It's still straight 3-year-olds, it's a graded stakes and seven furlongs will work out well as far as him stretching out to a mile-and-a-quarter after that.''

Afleet Alex has won eight of 12 career starts for earnings of $2,765,800. He is currently at 8/1 odds to win the Breeders Cup Classic race on Bodog Sportsbook.
